Privacy Policy – Szlak Jelonków

The Szlak Jelonków application (hereinafter: “the App”) does not collect, store, or share any personal data of the user. It does not require registration or an account. It contains no advertisements or analytics tools. Everything created while using the App – discoveries, badges, photos, postcards, walked trails – stays on your device.

Location

The App requests access to your device’s location (GPS) in order to show your current position on the trail map and to detect when you approach a deer sculpture (within 30 metres).

Tracking with the screen off. Since version 2.2.0 the App has a trail walking mode. Once you select a trail – and only then – it also follows your walk while the phone is in your pocket, in order to count the walk and give you guidance. Before that happens, the App shows a separate explanation and asks for your agreement. On Android this runs as a foreground service with a visible notification – the App uses the “while in use” permission and does not request background location access. On iOS it uses background location with the system indicator. Tracking stops the moment you put the trail away (“Stop following”). Outside trail mode, your position is read only while the App is in use.

What leaves the device. Your location is processed locally. Coordinates leave the device only when you ask for a route: to a chosen sculpture, to the nearest undiscovered ones, or back to the trail. They are then sent to our navigation server, which calculates the route in real time. We do not build a history of your routes or a user profile from them, and we do not link them to any identifier. Your walked track is never uploaded – the line you see on the map exists only in your phone’s storage.

Data stored locally

The App stores the following on your device:

  • the list of discovered deer sculptures with discovery dates, the badges you have earned (including the daily ones) and the master stamp,
  • souvenir photos and postcards – files in the App’s private directory,
  • trail walks: progress, time, number of completions and records, plus the GPS track of the current walk,
  • your preferences (language, theme, voice guidance, notifications, saving photos to the phone gallery),
  • downloaded files that let the App work without internet: the vector map of the Jelenia Góra area (~10 MB), trail data and voice recordings.

“Settings → Reset progress” deletes discoveries, badges, souvenir photos and the entire history of trail walks together with the GPS track. Postcards are deleted individually in the postcard gallery, and the local map copy is refreshed via “Settings → Re-download map”. Uninstalling the App removes everything. Copies of photos previously saved to your phone gallery remain untouched – the App has no right to delete them.

Photos, postcards and sharing

The camera and the phone gallery are used only when you ask for it: when taking a souvenir photo of a sculpture you have found, or when making a postcard. Photos stay inside the App; if you enable “Save to phone gallery”, a copy is also placed in the system gallery. The “Share” button opens the system share sheet – you choose where the image goes, and the App never sends it anywhere on its own.

Notifications and sound

While you are walking a trail, the App shows a single notification with the current hint and updates its content. This happens only while the App is in the background; notifications can be switched off in Settings. Note that the operating system may forward notifications to a paired watch or other devices – that is system behaviour, and the only thing the App can do about it is not to send notifications at all.

Voice guidance consists of recordings downloaded in advance from our server and played back from the phone’s storage. The App does not use the microphone and sends nothing to speech recognition or speech synthesis services.

Connections to external services

The App connects to the following services to fetch data required for its operation:

  • Self-hosted content server (CDN) – the list of sculptures, descriptions and images, the vector map file of the Jelenia Góra area (map data from OpenStreetMap), trail data with its descriptions, voice recordings, and information about the latest available version of the App,
  • Self-hosted navigation server – calculating walking routes (OSRM software, OpenStreetMap data).

Each connection is a standard HTTP request – your IP address is visible to the infrastructure provider, but the App does not transmit any other identifying data along with it. The App does not use any external advertising or analytics tools, and does not share data with third parties.

Device permissions

Android:

  • ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION – your position on the map and proximity detection.
  • FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_LOCATION – following your walk on a selected trail with the screen off. The service starts the moment you select a trail and stays visible in the notification bar the whole time. The App does not declare the ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION permission.
  • POST_NOTIFICATIONS – the guidance notification during a walk (Android 13 and newer).
  • CAMERA – souvenir photos and postcards. The camera is optional; the map, GPS and collection work without it.
  • READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (older Android versions only) – picking a photo from the phone gallery and saving a souvenir or postcard into it. On Android 10 and newer these are unused – the system file picker is enough.
  • VIBRATE – contributed by the notification library. The trail notification has vibration disabled.
  • INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE – downloading the map, images, trail data and navigation routes.

iOS:

  • NSLocationWhenInUseUsageDescription and NSLocationAlwaysAndWhenInUseUsageDescription – location while the App is in use, and in the background while walking a trail (UIBackgroundModes: location).
  • NSCameraUsageDescription, NSPhotoLibraryUsageDescription, NSPhotoLibraryAddUsageDescription – camera and gallery for souvenirs and postcards.
  • NSMicrophoneUsageDescription – required by the camera library. The App does not record audio; the camera is started with sound disabled.
  • Notification permission – requested only at the first hint shown in the background, not at app start.

Children

The App is intended for all age groups and does not knowingly collect any data from children.

This website

The szlakjelonkow.pl website uses no cookies and no analytics tools, does not profile visitors and contains no data collection forms. The server – like any web server – records standard connection data, including the IP address and browser type.

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, distributed under the ODbL license. Vector tiles generated from OSM data using the tilemaker tool.
