Anyone who has hunted the Wrocław dwarfs knows how addictive collecting urban figurines is. Jelenia Góra has its answer: the Little Deer Trail – 29 bronze deer at the foot of the Karkonosze. Here is an honest comparison of the two trails: what they share, what sets them apart and when to pick which.
The dwarfs: from a happening to over a thousand figurines
The Wrocław dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative – an anti-regime happening of the 1980s. In 2001 the commemorative Papa Dwarf was placed on Świdnicka Street, and in 2005 came the first five figurines by Tomasz Moczek. Today there are over a thousand dwarfs and counting – hardly anyone knows them all any more, and hunting them is a big-city game without end.
The deer: made by students of a crafts school
The little deer of Jelenia Góra are younger (since 2020) and have a completely different origin: they refer to the heraldic deer and the legend of the city's founding, and each figurine was designed and cast in bronze by students of the School of Artistic Crafts in Cieplice – as their diploma work. It is an intimate trail: 29 deer, each with a name, a story and a place on the map.

The biggest difference: the full set is within reach
There are so many dwarfs that nobody will ever collect them all – which is part of their charm. The deer work the other way round: you can realistically complete the whole collection in a weekend. The shortest route through all 29 figurines is about 26 km – one ambitious day or 2–3 days of district walks. The „got them all!" satisfaction is within any family's reach, and the free app collects discoveries like passport stamps and guides you by GPS to the next figurines.
Which trail to choose?
Best both – they are completely different adventures. The dwarfs are an endless game in a big city, between the Market Square and Ostrów Tumski. The deer are a trail „within arm's reach": a compact city at the foot of the Karkonosze, with the Cieplice spa, Chojnik Castle and mountain panoramas on the way. Jelenia Góra is just over an hour from Wrocław via the A4 and S3 – a dwarf weekend is easily extended by a deer one.
