Szlak Jelonków app

Szlak Jelonków – mobile tourist guide to Jelenia Góra

Szlak Jelonków is a free mobile app – a pocket guide to Jelenia Góra. It leads you by GPS to the deer figurines scattered around the city, puts the sights of both town trails on the map and walks you through the Cieplice trails with spoken guidance. The map works with no signal. Android and iPhone.

How the app works

Who writes it and who reads it

The voice-guided trails are led by a licensed mountain guide for the Sudetes (class III), licensed by the Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The same job as in the field, only the phone does the talking.

All the texts are mine: the descriptions of the deer, the trivia, the stories and the directions along the trail. They are read out by a speech synthesiser – a human voice-over in four languages would not survive the first correction made in the field. The voice is computer-generated; the words are not.

The app – frequently asked questions

Is the Szlak Jelonków app free?

Yes, it is completely free – no ads, no account required.

Which phones is it available on?

Android phones (Google Play) and iPhones (App Store).

Does the app work offline?

The map works offline – downloaded once on first launch, so it copes without a signal in the field (handy in the Krkonoše Mountains). Sculpture photos load online as needed.

In which languages is the app available?

The interface is available in four languages: Polish, English, German and Czech.

Do I have to create an account?

No. Progress, that is the discovered deer, is saved locally on your device.

Is there anything in the app besides the deer?

Yes. On the map you can switch on a layer of sights and attractions – the points of both Jelenia Góra town trails: churches, palaces, parks and monuments, each with a description and photos. A point is discovered like a figurine, only from further away, because some of them stand behind a gate or a wall.

Does the app guide you along walking trails?

Yes, along five: the Main Cieplice Walking Trail, the Cieplice green loop, the route to the Grave of the Unknown Priest, and the long and short Jelenia Góra town trails. The app shows your progress, warns about stretches that follow a roadway and speaks up when you leave the trail.

Do new places require an app update?

No. Descriptions, photos and new points come over the network and simply appear. An update from the store is only needed when an entirely new feature arrives.
