Stefanek
Stefanek – a scholarly little deer with an open book in his hooves. He sits in front of the Stefan Żeromski 1st High School, the oldest high school in Jelenia Góra, on a stone inscribed I LO. He proudly reads a set text – perhaps Syzyfowe prace (The Labours of Sisyphus), an autobiographical tale of the hardships of Polish schooling under the partitions.
Fun fact: Stefan Żeromski (1864–1925) was a writer of Positivism and Young Poland, author of Ludzie bezdomni (Homeless People), Przedwiośnie (The Coming Spring) and Syzyfowe prace. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1924, but it was won by Władysław Reymont for Chłopi (The Peasants) – Żeromski died a year later. The 1st High School in Jelenia Góra, the oldest in the city, has operated continuously since 1946.
