Harcerz

Harcerz (the Scout) – a comrade little deer with a staff in his hooves, a scout cross on his chest and a backpack on his back. He stands in front of the Druh Youth Hostel, where for generations troops setting off into the Karkonosze and school trips from all over Poland have stayed.

Fun fact: Druh (comrade) is the scouting form of address for a fellow scout – the equivalent of a brotherly mate, used as early as the Małkowskis' first Polish troops in 1911. The scout cross that Harcerz wears on his chest was designed by Fr. Kazimierz Lutosławski in 1913, modelled on the Virtuti Militari order. The Polish Youth Hostel Association has run a network of inexpensive hostels since 1926 – the Jelenia Góra Druh is a popular stop for trips heading into the Karkonosze.
