What to see in Jelenia Góra
Jelenia Góra lies at the foot of the Karkonosze and combines a historic old town, a spa, castle ruins and the closeness of the highest mountains of the Sudetes. Here are the finest attractions of the city and its surroundings – with the Little Deer Trail as the guiding thread.
The Little Deer Trail
The city's most recognisable attraction is the Little Deer Trail – 29 bronze sculptures of little deer scattered across Jelenia Góra. You explore them like a treasure hunt: looking for the figures, collecting them and learning the trivia. You will find them all on the interactive map, and most conveniently with the free app.
The old town and the Town Hall Square
The heart of the city is the Town Hall Square – a market square with the town hall, ringed by a row of historic townhouses with their characteristic arcades. It is the best place to start a walk around the centre, where most of the little deer also stand.
Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój
Cieplice is a spa district with hot springs among the warmest in Poland. Worth seeing are the Spa Park and the baroque Schaffgotsch Palace. How a duke discovered these springs is told in a separate legend. Above Cieplice also rises Sołtysia Hill with its lookout tower and a Karkonosze panorama.
Chojnik Castle above Sobieszów
Above Sobieszów rises one of the finest ruins in Lower Silesia – Chojnik Castle, on the summit of a wooded mountain (627 m), with a viewpoint and a 150-metre cliff above the Hell Valley. It is here that the famous legend of cruel Kunigunde takes place. See also the 360° panorama and the castle\'s history.
Jagniątków – Gerhart Hauptmann's villa
In Jagniątków, the highest-lying district, stands the villa of the Nobel laureate Gerhart Hauptmann – now a museum. It is a quiet mountain corner at the gateway to the Karkonosze National Park.
The Karkonosze and Mount Śnieżka
Jelenia Góra is the gateway to the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) – the highest range of the Sudetes, with Mount Śnieżka (1603 m) on the Czech border. Over these mountains the Spirit of the Mountains – Rübezahl has reigned for centuries.
Good to know – free and family-friendly
Walking the Little Deer Trail is free and works wonderfully with children – short stretches, collecting the figures and ice cream in Cieplice. Ready-made route variants are on the routes page, and the whole history of the city in the History section.
