What to see in Jagniątków

1 little deer of Szlak Jelonków

Coat of arms of Jagniątków district

Jagniątków is the highest-lying district of Jelenia Góra and the most mountainous stop on the Szlak Jelonków trail. It is thanks to it that Jelenia Góra borders the Czech Republic – as one of the few cities in Poland. It is famous for the villa of the Nobel laureate Gerhart Hauptmann, and by the local church waits the deer Kubuś.

Gerhart Hauptmann's villa

Jagniątków, an independent village until 1976 (and the German Agnetendorf until 1945), is known above all for the villa of Gerhart Hauptmann – the German writer and 1912 Nobel laureate in literature, who lived here from 1901. Today the villa houses a museum, and from the area views open up over the whole Jelenia Góra Valley as far as Śnieżka. By the church stands Kubuś, a little deer with a mug.

A gateway to the Karkonosze and the Czech border

As the highest-lying district, Jagniątków reaches all the way to the main ridge of the Karkonosze, along which the Polish-Czech border runs – and it is to this district that Jelenia Góra owes its shared border with the Czech Republic. There was even a border crossing here, Jagniątków–Petrova Bouda, abolished in 2007 after Poland joined the Schengen Area. Today mountain hikes into the Karkonosze set off from here, and the district itself is a quiet, green corner perfect for a family outing combined with the Szlak Jelonków trail.

What else to see nearby

Lower down lies Sobieszów with the ruins of Chojnik Castle, and further on the spa district of Cieplice. It is the mountain part of the Szlak Jelonków trail.
